U.S. Army Spc. Jose Ruiz Dies in Iraq
U.S. soldiers with the 3-21 Stryker Brigade Alpha Company First Platoon rush to the aid of Army Spc. Jose Ruiz, on August 15, 2005, in Mosul, Iraq. Ruiz was killed when he was hit by small arms fire from a civilian vehicle while conducting a security operation three weeks before he was to return home to begin a tour on a U.S. Army base in Tacoma, Washington. His death came during a week marked with violence as Iraq's leaders struggled over a draft of a new constitution, a charter they hope will bring stability and help end the insurgency. He had spoken with his wife Alexa only hours earlier, whom he leaves behind with the couple's nine month old daughter Liana.
